First grade is a time of tremendous personal growth and development. In our class, we enjoy participating in a variety of interesting activities. We learn how combinations of letters create the sounds found in many words, and learn to read these words in exciting stories throughout the year. We describe the settings, characters, and problems/solutions in fiction. We also work to describe, identify, and understand the elements of nonfiction text.
We're involved in fun math activities which help us learn more about number sense, time, money, measurement, and calendars. Perhaps most importantly, we work hard to gain a deep rooted understanding of place value. Place value is foundational to your child's ability to achieve academic success in mathematics. Real life situations are represented in story problems and help us develop our higher level thinking skills. Some of our activities are done with paper and pencil; others involve manipulatives.
As we learn and grow, it is very important for members of our class to respect each other, help each other, and rejoice in all accomplishments. We celebrate our differences, as well as our similarities, knowing that our rich cultures bring new thoughts and ideas to class discussions. We can learn from each other when we are willing to listen.
Much of our learning will take place as a whole class, but we also break into small groups for reading, math, and language arts. Utah has developed a Core Curriculum which outlines standards of learning that are essential for all students at the elementary level. The curriculum includes ideas, concepts, and skills that are developmentally appropriate. These skills provide a foundation on which subsequent learning is built. The curriculum for each grade level can be accessed on the Utah State Office of Education's website at:

Storytown, (Harcourt Publishers) is the reading program we use.
Math Expression, (Harcourt Publishers) is our mathematics program.
Students are expected to be at school on time every day unless illness prevents them from attending. Homework will be given in reading and math every day with few exceptions. This homework provides a time for students to practice what has been presented in class that day or week. It is extremely important that they complete the work on their own and be able to explain it to you. In addition to assigned homework, each student is expected to check out a book of their choice from the classroom library. Students are expected to read at home for 20 minutes every day. Your participation in their reading is crucial to their growth. Good readers read and good writers write!
If a problem occurs in our classroom that goes beyond normal methods of classroom management (turning a card, think time), missing a fun activity or staying after school for a few minutes to talk with me usually solves the problem. However, if I feel that we need to work together to remedy a situation, I'll get in touch with you. Your child's feelings of success and love of learning are my primary goals.
Clear standards and expectations are established for all students at each grade level. To be on grade level, students are expected to be able to demonstrate knowledge of the information that has been taught with minimal assistance from the teacher. I keep a record of homework as it is returned. You are welcome to review it to make certain that your child is complying with my homework policy. If your child is ill and must be absent, they will receive copies of homework and classwork to complete a return immediately.
